The Topic Sentence
Definition
The topic sentence is the main idea of the paragraph. It tells the reader what the paragraph will be about.
Example: Dogs make great pets because they are loyal and fun.
Placement
The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph, but it can sometimes be found elsewhere.
Example: After a long day of playing fetch and cuddling, dogs are truly man's best friend. Dogs make great pets because they are loyal and fun.
Characteristics
A good topic sentence is clear, concise, and focused. It should not be too broad or too narrow.
Example: Too broad: Dogs are animals. Too narrow: My dog is a golden retriever.
Supporting Sentences
Definition
Supporting sentences provide evidence, details, and examples that explain and develop the topic sentence.
Example: Dogs are loyal. For example, they will always be happy to see you when you come home.
Types of Support
Supporting sentences can include facts, statistics, examples, anecdotes, and reasons.
Example: Statistics show that dog owners are more active than non-dog owners.
Relevance
All supporting sentences should be directly related to the topic sentence and help to prove or explain it.
Example: A sentence about cats would not be relevant in a paragraph about why dogs make great pets.
Transition Words
Use transition words to connect supporting sentences and create a smooth flow of ideas.
Example: For example, In addition, Furthermore, Moreover, However
The Concluding Sentence
Definition
The concluding sentence summarizes the main points of the paragraph and provides a sense of closure.
Example: In conclusion, dogs make great pets because of their loyalty and playful nature.
Purpose
The concluding sentence should not introduce new information. It should restate the topic sentence in a new way or offer a final thought.
Example: Instead of introducing a new reason why dogs are great, summarize the reasons already provided.
Placement
The concluding sentence is usually the last sentence of the paragraph.
Example: Therefore, it is important to place it at the end of the paragraph.
