Area & Perimeter

Grades 4-7 · Concept Explainer

Key Points

  • Perimeter is the distance around a shape.
  • Area is the space inside a shape.
  • Perimeter is measured in regular units (e.g., inches, meters).
  • Area is measured in square units (e.g., square inches, square meters).
  • Different shapes have different formulas for calculating area and perimeter.

Area and perimeter are two important measurements we use to describe shapes. Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. Think of it like building a fence around a yard – the fence is the perimeter! We measure perimeter in units like inches, feet, or meters. Area, on the other hand, is the amount of space inside a shape. Imagine covering a floor with tiles – the number of tiles you need is the area! We measure area in square units, like square inches, square feet, or square meters. Knowing area and perimeter helps us solve many real-world problems.

Worked Example

A rectangle has a length of 8 cm and a width of 5 cm. What are its area and perimeter?

  1. Step 1: To find the perimeter, add up all the sides: 8 cm + 5 cm + 8 cm + 5 cm.
  2. Step 2: Calculate the sum: 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm. The perimeter is 26 cm.
  3. Step 3: To find the area, multiply the length by the width: 8 cm * 5 cm.
  4. Step 4: Calculate the product: 8 * 5 = 40 square cm. The area is 40 square cm.

Answer: Perimeter = 26 cm, Area = 40 square cm

Try It Yourself

1. A square has sides of 6 inches. What is its perimeter?

2. A rectangular garden is 12 feet long and 7 feet wide. How much fencing is needed to enclose the garden?

3. A room is shaped like an 'L'. One rectangle is 10m x 6m, and the other is 4m x 4m. What is the total area of the room?

Watch Out For These Mistakes

  • Forgetting to use square units when calculating area.
  • Adding all the numbers given in a problem without considering what they represent.
  • Confusing area and perimeter.
