Active Listening

Focus

Pay close attention to the speaker. Minimize distractions.

Identify Main Ideas

Listen for key points, arguments, and supporting details.

Example: Look for phrases like 'The most important thing is...' or 'In conclusion...'

Ask Questions

Clarify any points you don't understand. Asking questions helps you engage with the material.

Example: If you're confused, ask 'Could you explain that again?'

Note-Taking Methods

Cornell Method

Divide your paper into three sections: Notes, Cues, and Summary. Record notes in the main section, cues (keywords/questions) in the left column, and a summary at the bottom.

Example: Use the main section for lecture notes, the cue column for questions about the notes, and the summary for a brief overview of the page.

Outlining

Organize information hierarchically using headings, subheadings, and bullet points.

Example: I. Main Topic A. Subtopic 1. Detail 2. Detail

Mapping

Visually represent information using diagrams and connecting ideas with lines and arrows.

Example: Start with the main topic in the center and branch out to related ideas.

Charting

Organize information into tables with columns and rows to compare and contrast different aspects of a topic.

Example: Create a table with columns for 'Pros' and 'Cons' to analyze an argument.

Effective Note-Taking Techniques

Use Abbreviations

Shorten words and phrases to save time. Create a key for your abbreviations.

Example: e.g. (for example), i.e. (that is), w/ (with), w/o (without)

Paraphrase

Rewrite information in your own words to ensure understanding.

Example: Instead of writing 'Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy,' write 'Plants use sunlight to make food.'

Highlight Key Terms

Use highlighting or underlining to emphasize important concepts and vocabulary.

Example: Highlight vocabulary words and definitions.

Review and Revise

Review your notes shortly after taking them and fill in any gaps or clarify any confusing points.

Example: Review your notes within 24 hours to improve retention.
