  • Food chains show who eats whom.

Key Players in a Food Chain

Producers

Producers are organisms that make their own food, usually through photosynthesis. They form the base of the food chain.

Example: Plants, algae, and some bacteria are producers.

Consumers

Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms to get energy. They can be herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores.

Example: A rabbit eating grass is a consumer. A lion eating a zebra is also a consumer.

Decomposers

Decomposers break down dead plants and animals, returning nutrients to the soil. They are essential for recycling matter.

Example: Fungi and bacteria are decomposers.

Herbivores

Herbivores are consumers that eat only plants.

Example: Cows, rabbits, and deer are herbivores.

Carnivores

Carnivores are consumers that eat only animals.

Example: Lions, sharks, and snakes are carnivores.

Omnivores

Omnivores are consumers that eat both plants and animals.

Example: Humans, bears, and pigs are omnivores.

Understanding Food Chain Relationships

Energy Flow

Energy flows through a food chain from producers to consumers. Each time energy is transferred, some is lost as heat.

Example: The sun's energy is captured by a plant, which is then eaten by an insect. The insect is then eaten by a bird.

Trophic Levels

Trophic levels represent the position an organism occupies in a food chain. Producers are at the first trophic level, herbivores at the second, and so on.

Example: Grass (1st level) -> Grasshopper (2nd level) -> Frog (3rd level) -> Snake (4th level)

Food Chain Definition

A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another.

Example: Sun -> Grass -> Grasshopper -> Frog -> Snake -> Hawk

Predator-Prey Relationship

A predator is an animal that hunts and eats other animals (prey).

Example: A fox (predator) hunts and eats a rabbit (prey).
